What is DAB Radio?

As you’re probably aware, FM has been the standard frequency for broadcasting radio channels for many years. But, since the introduction of DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting), the game has changed.

How does DAB radio work?

DAB radio is essentially broadcast the same way as analogue FM radio would be, it’s just a lot more efficient in its use of spectrum. To delve into specifics, a spectrum is a range of frequencies and each radio broadcast uses a different frequency. Much like a T.V show is aired on a certain channel, a radio show is broadcast on a certain frequency.

Is DAB better?

Since it’s breakthrough in 1995, DAB has brought superior sound quality and some brand new features that radio had never seen before. Take radiotext, for example. This allows information such as song titles, music type and news or traffic updates to be broadcast alongside music, simultaneously.

What is DAB+?

DAB+ is essentially an improved version of the original. It’s doubled up on efficiency, making listening to the radio a more enjoyable, care-free experience for everyone, thanks to a lack of interference and stronger signals. 

DAB isn’t forward compatible with DAB+, meaning that older DAB receivers cannot receive DAB+ broadcasts. However, installing a new firmware upgrade means that standard DAB receivers can read DAB+ broadcasts.
